Defunkt (2002) Joseph Bowie, Trombone, vocals Kim Clarke, Bass Adam Klipple, Keyboards Tobias Ralph, drums Alex Harding, Baritone Sax Kahil El Zaber, percussion Also there is the Defunkt Big Band 15 musicians, (New Yorks finest)

The band is based in New York City. I live in Frederick, Maryland, near Washington, DC.
> What's made U play the Trombone ?
My older brothers played Trumpet (Lester Bowie) and the middle brother plays Saxophone (Byron Bowie). I wanted to play something different.

> Could U explain us your project with the last album "Defunkt ...the legends continues" ?
It is a collection of Defunkt songs from the beginning to the present, expecially picked out by myself. These are some of my favorites. Also, we wanted to let the younger audience hear what Defunkt has been doing for the last 20 yrs:)
> What do U keep in mind, for the 14 last albums U made with the group ?
I always want to make the next one better in some ways. I want the music to have an identity all its own, not to be confused with any other group.
> For U, is the funk is still alive ?
Yes it is alive! It is just hard to find:)
> What's suffer the funk today ?
The music industry dictates what music is exposed to the people today.

At the moment, Jean Paul-Bourelly's Trance Atlantic(Boom Bop II) and Beyond The Sky/Yuseef Lateef and Adam Rudolph. I am performing on both but I am enjoying especially these recordings while I do my exercises, (5 Rites) and (Temple Exercises)

Coltrane, Miles, Bird, The Art Ensemble of Chicago, James Brown, Jimi Hendrix etc.

> Is the group plan to do some live events and concerts in Europe ?

yes, I like the French rap artists, MC Solaar and many others that I do not remember the names.

Exposure and more young people playing the funk.
> Any new defunkt project ?
It will be a new studio CD done in the summer, 2002 with all new songs. Also a double CD of LIve DEFunkt form the last European tour in fall, 2001 also a live CD of the Moers Jazz Festival/Defunkt Big Band. This will be released in April. Later this year, I am working on a CD with a lyricist who is currently on Death Row in Texas Prison. I will write the music to his lyrics, Defukt/Words from Death Row
